BBC - MYTHS AND HEROES: THE QUEEN OF SHEBA

"I am the only daughter of the wise; utterly unknown to the foolish"

- Inscription on the Queen of Sheba's robe, according to St Thomas Aquinas

This was the second of the four films made for the BBC / PBS by MayaVision International and presenter Michael Wood. Our journey in search of this mythical Queen took us from Israel to Jordan, Egypt, Eritrea, Yemen and Ethiopia...

  • Yemeni hospitality! It never ceases to amaze me that in spite of peoples' perceptions of the aggressive foreign policies of our governments, we are still universally greeted with courtesy and genuine hospitality. To my mind, this is a true measure of civilization. This man invited us up to see the city from the roof of his house.Nikon F5, 17-35mm, Fuji Velvia 100

  • On the outskirts of the modern town of Marib lies this mound of rubble and earth, upon which the final decaying remnants of a once great citadel still stand. This is Marib, where a few poor folk still eek out a precarious existance amid the ruins. Above the doorways of some of the crumbling houses there are still inscriptions in Sabaean. At the base of the mound, the monoliths of a three thousand year-old Sabaean temple can still be seen, incorporated into the wall of a much later mosque.Nikon F5, 17-35mm, Fuji Velvia 100
  • One of the last surviving houses on the mound that once was the citadel of MaribNikon F5, 17-35mm, Fuji Velvia 100
  • There is a palpable sense of mystery and antiquity here amongst the ruins of Marib. Here, in the middle of some of the most inhospitable desert on earth, there lived three thousand years ago a sophisticated urban population of between 30 and 60,000, surrounded by lush gardens, orchards and farmland.
  • Completed in the 8th century BC, this was the key to Marib's existance in such a place. The stonework is of phenomenal quality, with sluices and anchor towers rising to a height of 18 metres. The dam was 750 metres across and held back water to a depth of 15m, which was used to irrigate an area of over 100 square kilometersNikon F5, 17-35mm, Fuji Velvia 100

Written in Amharic on sheepskin, this is the only copy in Ethiopia today. It was one of two taken by Lord Kitchener when he invaded. In 1892, Emporer Johannes of Ethiopia petitioned Queen Victoria for their return (a copy of the petition, in Amharic, is also on the desk).
