BBC - MYTHS AND HEROES: THE QUEEN OF SHEBA: The ruins of ancient Marib, Yemen

On the outskirts of the modern town of Marib lies this mound of rubble and earth, upon which the final decaying remnants of a once great citadel still stand. This is Marib, where a few poor folk still eek out a precarious existance amid the ruins. Above the doorways of some of the crumbling houses there are still inscriptions in Sabaean. At the base of the mound, the monoliths of a three thousand year-old Sabaean temple can still be seen, incorporated into the wall of a much later mosque.Nikon F5, 17-35mm, Fuji Velvia 100
