  • The man they call {quote}Sleepy{quote} - a legendary vocalist with a career spanning decades and output as varied as Studio One classics and work with Britain's trip hop superstars Massive Attack. On stage at Solfest in 2022. Having suffered a broken hand in a car crash in Kingston on his way to the airport, the fact that he turned up at all was testament to his professionalism. That he gave an unforgettable show was never in question! Fabulous.

  • @ The Upfront, November 17th 2017Fantastic band! Go see them!Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra don’t care what genre you choose to put them in – western swing, country blues, ragtime hokum or whatever else– as long as you understand that they’re 100% sincere and 100% immersed in this stuff. This is no lazy pastiche, no dressing up box. They live and breathe this music and want you to get immersed with them. The Tea Pad are seven years into a remarkable story that began with four friends studying at Newcastle University and now sees them playing venues and festivals across the UK and mainland Europe. Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne but with members hailing from Orkney to Warwickshire, the Tea Pad sound draws on myriad influences – from Bob Wills to Django Reinhardt, George Jones to Tom Waits – yet ultimately sounds like nobody else, that North Eastern Swing style that’s utterly their own and changing all the time.Across the four wonderful albums – 2012’s “Money Isn’t Everything”, 2014’s “Talk About The Weather”, 2016’s “Something Blue” and the brand new “Soul Of My City” – the band have constantly added new flavours to their sound: Heron in particular is a vinyl obsessive, always fired up about some new passion – calypso or boogaloo or whatever this week brings – and that eclecticism feeds into their songs, with the new album adding twangy 60s guitar tones and modernist R&B styles. The band tour the way bands should – widely and endlessly – winning friends and fans at each new show with notable performances at festivals like Glastonbury, Bestival, Wilderness and Cambridge Folk Festival. They’ve appeared twice on Radio 4’s Loose Ends, and had their music played by everyone from Marc Riley to Huey Morgan.November 2018 sees the band release their single “Life Is A Drag” on Germany’s Migraine Records ahead of their upcoming album “Soul Of My City”, which is released on Tea Pad Recordings on February 1st 2019.Joining Rob Heron (vocals and guitar) is Ben Fitzgerald (guitar), Tom Cronin (mandolin and harmonica), Colin Nicholson (accordion) and Ted Harbot (double bass) and Paul Archibald (drums).

  • November 8th 2014Baka Beyond was conceived in 1992 by British musicians Martin Cradick and Su Hart after a 6 week visit to the Baka Forest People deep in the heart of the Cameroon rainforest. They were struck by the Baka’s generosity of spirit and joy of life in hard circumstances which is reflected in their music. Martin and Su wanted to bring the spirit of this music back home so they recorded the album “Spirit of the Forest” released under the name “Baka Beyond” which pushed them into worldwide recognition. Massive credit to the Parkinson family for bringing music of this quality to Cumbria!

  • Hutton in the Forest, Unthank, near Penrith, Cumbriahttp://www.up-front.com/index.phpJohn and his wife Elaine opened this wonderful venue in 1997. John's background in stage design and puppetry and Elaine's background in education have allowed them to develop the space into the delightful place it is today. Art gallery space sits alongside the newly enlarged puppet theatre, in which their DJ and musician son Ben has started hosting an eclectic variety of live music nights.John asked me to photograph his summer show - Puss in Boots - in August 2015 to help with publicity. I spent a fascinating afternoon with him and fellow puppeteers takin portraits of the fabulous puppets he makes for his shows. I have been meaning to put a selection of these pictures online ever since, and am happy to do it at last!

  • Performing at the 2017 Keswick Jazz FestivalKarl Hird originally came from Australia. His parents were musicians who played trad jazz in the U.K. Karl is an experienced and accomplished reed man who understands the roots and regularly appears with T.J. Johnson, The Rich Bennett Band, The Jazzaholics and many other bands up and down the country.Dorine de Wit was a founder member of the popular RnB, jazz and ska band “Roadkill”. She also toured the UK and Denmark with the Rich Bennett Band which was a busy and popular band on the British jazz scene often winning “band of the year” in the clubs – pulling in the biggest crowd of the year.
  • Performing at the 2017 Keswick Jazz FestivalAfter spending his formative years immersed in the recordings of the late, great ‘Kid’ Ory in 1989 Mike moved to New Orleans, where he spent 10 years soaking in the city and its music, playing & and recording with many of the very best jazz musicians on that vibrant scene. In 2003, Mike moved to Århus, Denmark in 2003 from where he toured throughout Europe with his own bands, the deliciously named “Bordello Bedwarmers” and “Woodland Jazz Band” and as a much sought after guest star. Now based back in the UK.

  • Performing at the 2017 Keswick Jazz FestivalThe number of good guitarists who play rhythm as well as solo guitar is small, the number who also play banjo is even smaller. The number who do both well, is, in the UK, possibly limited to five or six persons. Tony Pitt in one of the tops. Tony has been a long serving member of at least three of England's top bands, playing for many years in Alex Welsh's Band, followed by years in Acker Bilk's Band, and then by two stints with Kenny Ball's Band. Tony is a real swinging player on both instruments and his playing knits the rhythm section together superbly. Tony has also been playing with the Alan Elsdon Band, Stan Greigs Boogie Band and the M4 Band (a band of ex Acker sidemen).
